The second and third greens at Wannamoissett CC

The 64th Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett CC (Rumford, RI) runs from June 24-27. It’s a 72-hole stroke play event with a 54-hole cut.

Wannamoisett CC (Rumford, RI) is a stern Golden Age test. While it might not be long, the par 69 requires precision off the tee due to the long rough. Playing from the fairway makes it a little easier to attack the pins, but the greens, some of Donald Ross’s best, are incredibly fast, with severe slopes and nooks and crannies to hide pins. Hitting a green in regulation does not guarantee par.

The event is one of seven events in the summer’s Elite Amateur Series. It boasts one of the strongest fields in all amateur golf. Over the course of the summer, players who compete in Elite Amateur Series events earn points. The Elite Amateur Cup is awarded to the player who earns the most points. A collection of professional exemptions is awarded to the top performers.

The event is open to the public, and it’s worth attending if you’re in the area. Heck, it’s worth the drive.

Here are the ten players from New England who will tee it up this week in the Northeast Amateur. Let’s meet them.

Ryan Downes - Longmeadow, Massachusetts

Downes has made the cut in all three of his appearances at the Northeast Amateur. He finished T52 in 2024, 55th in 2025, and T58 in 2024. On a windy day last year, Downes recorded the second-best round of the day, a 71, in the third round. No one broke 70 that day. Downes is coming off his sophomore year at Vanderbilt, where his team reached the quarterfinals in the National Championship. He won his first collegiate tournament in the fall. Downes is a two-time Mass Amateur champion.

Matt Parziale - Brockton, Massachusetts

Parziale has played in every Northeast Amateur since 2014. His best finish is T15 in 2018. Last year, he finished in T58. He’s made the cut 8 times in those 11 events and has two top 20 finishes. Parziale has been playing well this spring. He paired up with Herbie Aiken in the Mass Four-Ball and lost in a playoff; Parziale shot 64 on his own ball in the second round at Indian Pond in diabolical weather. He also recorded a T2 finish in the Huddleston Cup in Texas and made the first flight of the C.B. MacDonald Invitational last week.

Mike Calef - Portsmouth, Rhode Island

The 2025 Rhode Island Amateur champion has a few starts under his belt this spring. He finished T3 in the Norfolk County Classic, T36 in the Mass Open, and T28 in The Hornblower. He also reached U.S. Open Final Qualifying. Calef won the 2012 and 2013 Mass Amatuer. He’s one of nine players to win back-to-back Mass Amateurs, and the only player to win the Rhode Island and Mass Amateur championships.

Adam Friedman - Westport, Connecticut

The 2025 Connecticut Amateur champion had a solid 2025. He finished 8th in the New England Amateur and 9th in the Met Amateur. At this year’s Hornblower, he was in the final group after an opening 66; he’d finish T9 following a second round 73.

Josiah Hakala - New Ipswich, New Hampshire

Hakala is the 2024 Mass. Junior Amateur champion and the 2025 New Hampshire Amateur winner. He made some noise at the Hornblower his spring as he threatened the course record in the second round. He ended up shooting 65 and finished T4. Hakala is also the 2024 PGA Boys High School Golf National Invitational champion. Last year, he missed the cut in the Northeast Amateur.

Bobby Leopold - Coventry, Rhode Island

One of the best amateurs in Rhode Island history, Leopold is a five-time state amateur champion. There is also a spot for the Wannamoisett CC club champion in the Northeast Amateur field, and between his state amateur titles and club championship wins, Leopold has been in the field every year since 2013. His best finish was a T17 in 2013. He missed the cut last year.

Eli Spaulding - Freeport, Maine

Spaulding is fresh off winning the Philadelphia Amateur this past weekend. Spaulding finished T6 in the Hornblower. Last summer, he won his second Maine Amateur and tacked on his first New England Amateur. That pair of victories means Spaulding swallowed up an exemption, as both those tournament winners get a spot in the Northeast Amateur. He just wrapped up his sophomore year at Loyola. He earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors his freshman year, and in his sophomore year, he was named to the PING All-Region Team, Patriot League First Team, and was Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Bradley Sawka - Ellington, Connecticut

Sawka is the Connecticut Player of the Year in 2025. The UConn standout just finished his junior year, during which he lost in a playoff round after tying Markus Lam in the UConn Invitational. He recorded 5 top-10 finishes. He reached the quarterfinals of this year’s Connecticut Amateur, losing to eventual runner-up Cody Paladino. He also finished 6th in the Big East Conference Championship.

Bradford Tilley - Easton, Connecticut

Tilley finished T12 in the Northeast Amateur last year, and has played in the last five Northeast Amateurs. He’s a decorated Mid-Amateur who was a professional after a successful college career at the University of Virginia. He’s played in multiple USGA events.

Michael Walsh - Shelbourne, Vermont

The 2025 Vermont Amateur champion is a former high school state champion from Rice High School. He played his college golf at Lafayette before transferring to Temple and completing his college career this spring.

Notables in the field:

Kihei Akina - NCAA Freshman of the Year and Quarterfinalist in the 2026 Amateur Championship in England.
