Broderick and Downes tee it up for Vandy
+ my thoughts on Walpole CC
Hey Everyone,
I played Walpole CC in a MassGolf Member Day on Monday. It was my first time participating in one. Noah Kortcamp invited me to join him (I was on his podcast this winter). The Member Days are based on a lottery. MassGolf members are eligible. Apparently, they are very popular as they grant access to private courses all over the state. There’s a small competitive aspect to the event. We played Stableford net and gross. I need more stableford in my life. Just a great simple format.
Bogey = 1 point
Par = 2 points
Birdie = 4 Points
Eagle = 8 points
Everything higher than a double bogey is zero points so you pick up and move on. A sneaky great way to have beginners play.
Premium subscribers will get a taste of my thoughts on Walpole and some photos below the News and Notes section.
News and Notes:
U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur: I went out to Brae Burn CC on Sunday to watch the second round and follow some of the Bay Staters in the field. Shannon Johnson and Megan Buck made match play. Johnson lost a tough match in the Round of 64 in 19 holes. Buck lost in the Round of 32 to Raegan Bremer…. Mary Mulcahy (+20), Tara Joy-Connelly (+21), and Claire Richardson (+27) missed the cut.
The course played tough. There was one round under par in the two days of stroke play. Angela Austin shot 70 on Saturday. She is six months pregnant and is in the quarterfinals on Wednesday morning.
Solheim Cup: Megan Khang will tee it up for Team USA in the Solheim Cup this week in Virginia. She was a star in last year’s event in Spain. The two teams tied in 2023 and Europe retained the Solheim Cup. They moved this year’s event to 2024 to get off the Ryder Cup schedule. I liked having the two events in the same month last year, but I understand the need to spread them out.
College Kids: Ryan Downes and John Broderick played for Vanderbilt in the Inverness Intercollegiate at Inverness CC in Ohio. Broderick, a junior, shot 69-68-68 and finished T7. He was the second low scorer for the Commodores. Downes, a freshman, finished T43 with rounds of 72-73-70 (+8). Broderick left for Nashville in August as the points leader in the MassGolf Player of the Year race. He had a very strong summer. Vanderbilt is the No. 4 ranked team in the country.
Morgan Smith finished 43rd in her debut for Georgia in the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall in Charleston, SC. The Bulldogs finished 8th. Molly Smith and UCF are competing in the ANNIKA in Minnesota. After two rounds of 73, Smith is T21 with 18 holes remaining on Wednesday. Live scoring.
Crump Cup: One of the most secretive events in golf. Pine Valley hosts many of the best Mid-Amateurs in the world this week. It’s 36 holes of stroke play, and then the field is put into 16-person flights for match play. I will be on te grounds for the final matches on Sunday. I will also not be allowed to have a camera or phone with me. I also attended the 2022 final matches and they did let me take pictures. I wrote about the experience here and created a photo gallery here.
Nick Maccario and Matt Parziale will be competing.

Here is the Walpole CC (course 132) review that will be posted on IG this week. Paid subscribers will get to read it early and see some pictures, along with a few extra thoughts that wouldn’t fit in the IG word count.
