BSG Weekend Round-up

USGA, College, Korn Ferry results

There’s an incredible amount of golf being played at the moment. I thought I’d sit down and collect as many results as I could and deliver them to you this Monday morning.

College golf is nearly impossible to follow these days. There isn’t one centralized location to check results and follow along. Some events use GolfStat while others use Clippd/Scoreboard. I’ve even come across some events on Golf Genius. Could you imagine having to go to three different sites on Thursday of March Madness just to check scores?

My hope is to pull together results connected with Mass. teams and players who might be on rosters in other states on a bi-weekly basis. Division 1 men’s and women’s will be the focus to start, I’m only one man.

If I missed something, it’s 100% on purpose. I'm kidding. Send along any stories or results, and I’ll add them to the log for the next round-up newsletter. Trophy shots are always welcome, too! [email protected].

This week, we’ve got U.S. Mid-Am and U.S. Senior Women’s Am 36-hole results, a slew of college events, Korn Ferry Tour Championship berths, and a preview of some upcoming tournaments.

Sept. 23 Round-up

  • U.S. Mid-Amateur: This week, Massachusetts golfers had a good chance of having at least one player reach match play down in Virginia. Unfortunately, that’s not how it shook out. Matt Parziale was the closest, sweating out a fluid cutline. He shot 74-69 (+2), missing the cut by a shot. He might be wishing he had a chance to replay his 15th hole on Sunday. The double bogey proved costly, and a birdie on 18 gave him hope. What a cruel game. Ricky Stimets (+3) and Nick Maccario (+4) were the next two Bay Staters closest to the cut line. Live Scoring

  • U.S. Senior Women’s Am: Three of the five Mass. golfers reached matchplay in Colorado. Sue Curtin shot 78-78 (+16) and Pam Kuong and Tara Joy-Connelly both bounced back after shooting 83 in the first round. Kuong shot 73 on Sunday (+16) and Joy-Connelly shot 74 (+17. Follow their Round of 64 matches here.

  • Mass. Senior Amateur: Salem CC hosts one of the final championships in the Bay State this season. Live Scoring

College Final Results:

  • Ryan T. Lee Memorial: Merrimack was the only men’s team from Massachusetts to play in the Ryan T. Lee at Shuttle Meadow CC in Connecticut. They finished T11. Somerville’s Aidan O’Donovan and Concord’s Tyler Bruneau played a big part in University of Rhode Island’s win. Bruneau shot 68-69 (-5) in his college debut for a runner-up finish. Results.

  • The Massachusetts Hoyas: Georgetown is another team with plenty of Bay State appeal. The Hoyas had four players from Mass. competing in the Goat at the US Naval Academy: Weston natives C.J. Winchenbaugh, Alan Rose, and Max Hutter and Wellesley’s Conner Willet. Winchenbaugh led the way for the Hoyas with a 12th place finish. Results

  • Right at home in Georgia: Morgan Smith finished T5 for Georgia at +3 par in the Hoover Invitational last week.

College events in Progress:

  • Rod Myers Invitational: Joey Lenane shot 72-73 in the first two rounds of the Rod Myers Invitational. He’s in T23 and his NC State team is tied for the lead with Duke. Live Scoring.

  • Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational: Holy Cross is playing down out in Colorado Springs. The Crusaders are in 21st place. The tournament finishes on Sept. 23. Live Scoring

  • Another Tourament at Vanderbilt: Ryan Downes and John Broderick held onto their spots on the No. 4 Vanderbilt squad for the team’s second event - The Valero Texas Collegiate in San Antonio. After two rounds, Downes is T50 after shooting 74-73. Broderick shot 69-72 and is T10. The tournament wraps up on Monday. Vanderbilt is in sixth place as a team. Live Scoring.

  • Women’s Red Bandanna Invitational: On Monday, Boston College, Boston University, Holy Cross, Merrimack College, and Stonehill will all tee it up at Blue Hills in Canton. The tournament runs from September 23 and 24. Live Scoring

  • Bound for the Korn Ferry Tour Championship: Locals Robbie Oppenheim, Richy Werenski, Davis Chatfield, and John VanDerLaan all booked their trip to the Korn Ferry Tour Championship after finishing inside the top 75 after this week’s tournament in Columbus, Ohio. Werenski shot a 64 on Friday to help him finish T13.

This is a big deal because reaching the Tour Championship means these players have full status on the Korn Ferry Tour next year. At the end of the Tour Championship, the top 30 players earn their PGA Tour Card.
