Course 150: Far Corner GC

Target golf on the North Shore

When I check off a new golf course, I post a review on Instagram. If you are interested in reading the review early, and reading some additional thoughts that go beyond the Instagram caption limit, you can become a Supporter or Founder.

Far Corner is the type of course that needs a few rounds to really figure out how to play. After a gentle handshake opening par 5, holes 2-7 on the Fox are tight, target golf that doesn't allow much margin for error off the tee. Pairing the right club and line is pivotal to have a glimpse at the greens on approach shots.

Hole 7 is one of the more diabolical par 3s I have seen on the quest. It is 235 yards from the tips, and the green is perched up and guarded by water on three sides.

The par-3 7th.

It seems more likely that a player walks off the 7th green dizzy from high scores than feeling good about their golf game.

As the round progresses, the haymakers lighten up. Holes 8 and 9 on the Fox are good, and then the Herron, while still tight, feels more manageable.

Hole 2 on the Fox. A tough tee shot.

The par-5 11th (2nd on Herron) is a rollicking ride that needs attention off the tee. A massive slope can carry the ball into the trees or into the major's office for a great chance at birdie. It feels like a razor's edge decides that fate.

The standout holes on the course are the 5th and 17th.

Hole 5 (Fox) calls for a long, accurate tee shot to beat the dogleg, and then players are rewarded with a steep uphill second to a green benched into a hill. A beast of a hole, but the first opportunity to swing driver since the first hole.

The 17th (8 on Herron) is a charming, short par 3 tucked among the trees. It's downhill to one of the more interesting greens, which sits on a hillside. Left misses can careen down towards the 18th tee box.

Honorable mention would go to the uphill 10th and the dogleg 16th.

The closing stretch of 15-18 is overall very good. A nice mix of holes with two par 3s (15 and 17) and two par 4s. They blend a lot of what the course offers over the opening 14 holes. Holes 16 and 17 require precision while holes 15 and 18 have a touch more space.

Looking back down the 9th hole on The Fox.

The course was in good condition, which seems to be the case more often than not. The greens were lush and rather slow.

It is an incredibly challenging walk because there are some long walks between holes.

With a few rounds, Far Corner would get easier to manage and enjoy
