Ryan Downes of Vanderbilt hits a shot in the 2024 Northeast Amateur.
Conference championships in college golf provide each champion with a berth in the NCAA Regionals. The top six schools from each region get a spot in the NCAA National Championship at La Costa in San Diego, California.
Here is a round-up of all the men’s and women’s conference championships that involved a team from Massachusetts or a team with a Massachusetts player on their roster.
Men’s
ACC Conference
Boston College finished 14th in the ACC Championship. This is one of the most loaded golf conferences in the country, with a few national championship hopefuls. Christian Emmerich (Swampscott, Mass.) finished T63.
A bit of Massachusetts adjacent news: Ben James (Milford, Conn.) finished T6 and helped Virginia win the ACC Championship.
IVY League
Princeton won the championship by 17 shots. They finished the event one-under par as a team, an impressive feat. Harvard finished in third place. Ieuan Jones finished in second place for the Crimson.

MAAC
Merrimack’s program started from scratch in 2022. So they have been slowly building out a roster and experience. They finished in seventh place this year in the 11 team conference. Kai-Jun Huang led the way for Merrimack, finishing in fifth place. Brendan Zinck (Melrose, Mass.) finished in 31st place.
Fairfield won the event by two shots over Sacred Heart.

Patriot League
Loyola-Maryland edged out Holy Cross by a single shot in the Patriot League championship. It came down to the last hole, as the Crusaders tried to close the gap and couldn’t.
Holy Cross senior Nolan Schuermann (Cincinnati, Ohio) beat Lafayette’s Quint Dingledine in a playoff to decide the individual champion. Schuermann will compete in the NCAA Regionals. That will be announced on Wednesday, April 30.
Ryan Scollins (Wrentham, Mass.) finished T8 for Holy Cross, and senior Owen Egan wrapped up his playing career at Holy Cross with a 40th-place finish. He was in the hunt for the individual title until the third round 82.
Maine Amateur champion Eli Spaulding finished T10 while competing for Loyola-Maryland.
Individuals
Georgetown
I know, I know, this isn’t an individual, but the Hoyas sent four Mass. players (all of them are from Weston!!) to the Big East Championship. As a team, they finished in seventh place.
Freshman C.J. Winchenbaugh shot 71-73-75 and finished 21st.
Senior Jacob Finard finished 26th with rounds of 75-74-72.
Senior Max Hutter shot 79-73-76 to finish 42nd, and freshman Alan Rose shot 76-76-82 for a 47th place finish.
Tyler Bruneau - URI
Concord, Mass.
After playing high school golf at Concord-Carlisle HS, Bruneau headed south to Florida and finished his high school career, sharpening his game. He returned north and capped off his freshman year at URI with rounds of 71-73-76 to finish 22 in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
Ray Dennehy - UConn
Princeton, Mass.
The Husky senior shot 72-81-76 at Callawassie Island Club in the Big East Championship to finish 43rd. UConn finished fourth behind Marquette, Xavier, and Creighton.
Ryan Downes - Vanderbilt
Longmeadow, Mass.
Downes was one of the lone bright spots for a Vanderbilt team that underperformed for the bulk of the season. He shot 72-70-69 to finish T37 in the SEC Championship. He was the second-lowest scorer for the Commodores. Considering the team’s No. 18 rank in the country, their 13th place finish shouldn’t hurt their NCAA Regional qualifications. They’ll find out on Wednesday, April 30, if their season will continue.
Trevor Drew - Western Kentucky
Tyngsborough, Mass.
Drew, a freshman, shot 76-77-71—224 (+8) to finish T35 in the Conference USA Championship .
Tyler Dupuis - Bryant
Grafton, Mass.
Dupuis finished off his playing career at Bryant with a 69 in the final round of the Ohio Valley Conference (yes, college golf conferences ignore geography a lot). He finished 30th.
Aidan Emmerich - Temple
Swampscott, Mass.
Emmerich shot 73-70-72 and finished T26 in the American Athletic Conference Championship.
Weston Jones - Rutgers
Sudbury, Mass.
Jones has been a staple on the Rutgers team for the last four years. He finished off a distinguished career with rounds of 72-75-76 in the Big 10 Championship and finished 65th.
Cael Kohan - Bryant
Byfield, Mass.
The senior shot 76-74-84 and finished in 46th place in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship at Dalhousie GC in Missouri.
Vikram Konanki - UCONN
Newton, Mass.
The senior had a nice finish this spring and capped it off with rounds of 74-73-74 to finish 26th in the Big East Championship.
Joey Lenane - NC State
Dedham, Mass.
The junior shot 76-74-72 in the ACC Championship and finished T46.
Sean Magarian - URI
Worcester, Mass.
It was an excellent finish to Magarian's Bryant career. He shot 70-73-72 and finished 11th in the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship.
Emil Nielsen - Santa Clara
Wellesley, Mass.
Nielsen went west for college golf and had a good first year for the Broncos. He shot 71-72-72 at Green Valley CC to finish 30th in the West Coast Conference. He also helped the team reach the match play round, which included only four teams. He won his semi-final match 6&,5 but the Broncos lost to Loyola-Marymount.
Aidan O’Donovan - URI
Somerville, Mass.
The junior finished in 39th place in the A-10 Championship. He shot rounds of 76-75-77.
Ethan Whitney - Temple
Westminster, Mass.
Whitney shot 77-71-73 in the American Athletic Conference Championship and finished T43.
Women
ACC
Boston College finished 11th in the highly competitive ACC Championship, which included the defending national champion, Stanford.
Cynthia Zhang and Ana Lucia Trevino led the way for the Eagles; they both finished T31 with a 54-hole score of 6-over par.
2023 Mass. Women’s Amateur champion Rebecca Skolar had a stellar final conference championship. She shot rounds of 74, 71, 72 and finished T11 individually. Virginia finished T2 in stroke play. However, they lost in the first round of match play to Cal-Berkeley.
The strong showing by Virginia earned them the No. 2 seed in the Charlottesville Regional at Birdwood Golf Course.
IVY League
Princeton ran away and hid from the rest of the field at Royal Palm GC. Harvard finished in second place, 16 shots behind the Tigers. Catie Schernecker, the 2022 Ouimet Invitational Women’s champion finished in 34th place. Vanessa Zhang won the IVY League individual title by five shots with rounds of 67, 68, 70 (-11); she will represent Harvard as an individual at Ohio State GC from May 5-7.
Princeton is the 10 seed in the Charlottesville Regional.

Patriot League
Boston University and Holy Cross both competed in the Patriot League Conference championship. BU finished in second place, 38 shots behind Navy who dominated the event at Saucon Valley CC. Holy Cross had a tough week and finished in fifth place.

MAAC
The Merrimack women had a good showing in their first appearance in the MAAC Championship. A final round 295, which matched Quinnipiac for the low score of the day, helped them climb the leaderboard.
First-year Maya Murphy (Bourne, Mass.) finished in 41st place for Merrimack. In addition, Siena’s Mackenzie Whitney (Westminster, Mass.) shot 75, 78, 84 and finished in 25th place.

Northeast Conference
Stonehill had four players finish inside the top 30 in the Northeast Conference championship en route to a fifth-place finish in the 12-team conference. Helen Brodahl (Portland, Oregon) led the way for Stonehill, finishing in sixth place. Junior Jaelyn DeBoise (Springfield, Mass.) finished 29th, and sophomore Carol Piganto (Foxbourgh, Mass.) finished 47th.

Individuals:
Isabel Brozena - Xavier
North Reading, Mass.
Brozena’s first year at Xavier isn’t over yet. She shot 79-74-73 (+10) to finish in eighth place. It helped the team win the Big East championship for the seventh straight year. They will play in the Columbus Regional at Ohio State GC.
Molly Smith - University of Central Florida
Westford, Mass.
Smith, like Brozena, still has more golf to play this season. While UCF underperformed in the Big 12 Championship with a ninth-place finish, they earned an at-large bid in the Charlottesville Regional. Smith finished 23rd in the Big 12 Championship with rounds of 73-73-76.
Morgan Smith - Georgia
Westford, Mass.
It was a disappointing end to the season for Smith and her Georgia Bulldogs. Smith shot 81-77-75 at Pelican Golf Club and the team finished in 16th place. Over the course of her sophomore year, Smith recorded three top-five finishes including two runner-up finishes.
Mackenzie Whitney - Siena
Westminster, Mass.
The junior shot 75-78-84 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and finished in 25th place.
