Ouimet Memorial Preview: The Players
Three concurrent events means a plenty of talent will tee it up
The Ouimet Memorial will be held at Wollaston GC (Milton, Mass.) and Woodland GC (Newton, Mass.) from July 23-25. The event always finishes at Woodland GC and the first two rounds rotate to different clubs in the state. The event has been held since 1968, the year after Francis Ouimet passed away. Woodland GC is where Ouimet was a member, and his friends decided to have a tournament in his memory.
In 1999, they added the Lowery Division for seniors. It’s named after Eddie Lowery, Ouimet’s friend who caddied for him during his famous 1913 U.S. Open win at The Country Club. Then in 2004, the tournament added a women’s division.
All three events happen concurrently.
What Happened Last Year?
Jack O’Donnell won the Championship division. The University of Michigan golfer shot 66-67-73 to win by three shots over Conner Willett. Cooper Griffin, a member at Woodland, set the tournament record in the final round with a 65.
Isabel Brozena dominated the women’s event with rounds of 66-71-71 (-7). She was the only player under par and won by 8 shots over Morgan Smith.
The Lowery Division was full of drama, as Doug Clapp and Frank Vana Jr. needed six playoff holes to decide a champion. Clapp closed a five-shot gap in the final round with a 71, while Vana shot 76 and relinquished a big lead. Vana would hold on for his eighth Ouimet trophy across the Championship and Lowery Divisions.
