Twitter reacts to TGL
DJ Khaled called it "historic..."
It’s 11:30.
The Celtics are battling the Jokic-less Denver Nuggets, and the first TGL match has just wrapped up.
It was… fine. I was kind of locked in for the beginning due to the novelty of the event. Indoor golf on a massive screen involving six PGA Tour pros that has been teased for more than a year had me intrigued.
And then DJ Khaled appeared on the screen…

When I was a teacher, my school launched a “House System” that mirrored Hogwarts. It was a massive undertaking to get the entire thing off the ground and all the moving parts meant we were constantly making tweaks and changes.
That’s what it felt like watching this first match. It’s the first one. No one wants the first two pancakes, it’s the third pancake that’s the best.
However, Golf Twitter isn’t going to sit around and wait for the third pancake.
It was a delightful mix of love and hate.
watching someone hit a golf ball at a computer screen fills me with the kind of emptiness only private equity could dream up

If Patrick Cantlay was a transformer, his other form would be the SoFi Center.
i am not someone who tries to hate on everything golf does. i like the broadcasts mostly. i get the commercials.

This was a strong first reaction. Note the 9:28 timestamp. After all the set-up and explanation, the first tee shot was probably hit at 9:20.
this is leaving me a little cold, like I thought it would, but I'm trying not to just confirm my own priors. What are people thinking first impressions here?

Watching golf indoors and on a screen probably left a lot of people “cold.” It’s certainly different.
This TGL thing is either really cool or really dumb, I’m not sure which. It may be both.

Agree.
Things I love about TGL:
Spectacular pace of play
Right amount of chatter
The tech stuff is cool
The green complex is legit
The holes are interesting as a challengeThings I want to see:

Some folks liked it, though.
7 reasons @TGL is awesome:
1. No forced banter (unlike The Match). Instead, we get organic moments that feel real and fun.
2. PGA Tour pros smiling, laughing, and actually having fun? Rory and Tiger included. It's refreshing.
3. The wild, creative hole layouts? Awesome and… x.com/i/web/status/1…

Just had a golf buddy call and say, “This is so cool, I’m really impressed… but now that I’ve seen it, I don’t really want to watch anymore.” That’s a very fair assessment.

I think this is how I feel, too. I’ll watch it if I remember to watch it. I am intrigued to see Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
There were some funny moments, too.

Has Ludvig replaced Adam Scott and Brooks Koepka as the handsome guy? Is he part of the handsome club?

This one got me out loud.
The extreme variance of texts and messages I am getting is wild. This is either the worst thing ever and needs to be shut down ASAP or it's incredibly cool.

In the end, trying to make something new from scratch is very challenging. There will be people who like it and who hate it and others who don’t care and other who might tune in again out of continued curiosity.
