Hey Everyone,

It’s been a heck of a week. I spent Monday-Wednesday walking around Merion GC watching a collection of the best amateur golfers in the world. 11 of those golfers were from New England.

I left on Wednesday night pretty exhausted and can’t imagine who the golfers feel trying to manage their game and emotions on the firm fairways, long rough, and fast greens.

I wrote about Monday and Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur.

There are eight players left. There’s TV coverage Friday to Sunday.

  • Friday, August 14 | Quarterfinals: Peacock/NBCSN, 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

  • Saturday, August 15 | Semifinals: Peacock, 3 p.m.-4 p.m. | Semifinals: NBC, 4 p.m.-6 p.m.

  • Sunday, August 16 | Championship Match (Afternoon 18), Peacock, 3 p.m.-4 p.m. | Championship Match (Afternoon 18): NBC, 4 p.m.-6 p.m.

News and Notes

FedEx St. Jude Championship

Michael Thorbjornsen is right back where he was on August 2: the top of the leaderboard. He shot a 65 (-5) and is tied for the lead with Jordan Spieth, Kurt Kitayama, Jake Knapp, and Michael Kim. He’s currently 38th in the FedEx Cup Standings. A win would jump him safely inside the top 30, the magic number for reaching the Tour Championship. Live Scoring

Boise Open

Chris Francoeur shot 65 (-6) and is T10 out in Idaho. Rob Oppenheim shot 69 (-2) and is T71. Trevor Cone and Stuart MacDonald both shot 62 and hold the lead. Live Scoring

Standard Portland Classic

Alexa Pano shot 69 (-3), and Megan Khang shot 73 (+1) in the first round in Oregon. | Live Scoring

I wrote about what’s at stake these next two events for Megan Khang as she fights for a spot on the Solheim Cup team. She has a stellar record in the last two events, going 6-0-1 in the team event. She’ll probably need a captain’s pick on August 24, the Monday before the FM Championship, to make the trip to the Netherlands.

U.S. Amateur

Ryan Downes was the lone New England representative to make match play in the U.S. Amateur. He shot 69-71 (E) and earned the 30th seed. He drew 3-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Stewart Hagestad. Hagestad grabbed a 3-up lead after making birdies on holes 1, 2, and 4 and held Downes at arm’s length the rest of the match, winning 5&3.

Stretching for a connection to the Bay State, Christian Cavaliere, a Boston College grad, reached the Round of 16 before losing to Jack Whaley. He had his friend and BC Golf Team Assistant Coach Brendan Ridge on the bag.

The quarterfinals will be on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday, and the 36-hole championship match on Sunday. | Live Scoring

Here are the results for each of the New England players.

Mass Women’s Amateur - Championship Match is set

The championship match is set in the Mass. Women’s Amateur at Oak Hill CC in Fitchburg, Mass. It’s a rematch of last year’s semi-final match between Isabel Brozena and Molly Smith. Brozena won 3&2 at Concord CC last year en route to the title.

Smith has never reached the final in her decorated amateur career. This has her fourth semi-final appearance.

Molly Smith is looking for her first Mass. Women’s Amateur victory

Both Brozena and Smith competed in the Women’s Amateur in Scotland this summer; they each made match play. Then last week, they played in the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Brozena missed the cut for match play, but Smith reached the Round of 32.

I wrote profiles about Smith and Brozena before they teed it up in the U.S. Women’s Amateur.

Isabel Brozena will try to defend her title

The match will start at 7:30 am. It’s open to the public, and it’s an 18-hole match. Go watch! If you can’t, MassGolf will have live streaming on their Instagram. | Live Scoring

This event takes place from August 13-16 on three courses. On Thursday, the field played Foxborough CC. Then they’ll play Wentworth Hills on Friday. Saturday and Sunday are both at Ledgemont CC. Ken Charnley is the only player under par after a 71 (1-) in the opening round. | Live Scoring

When I’m not golfing…

I’m reading

  • Miles Fisher has a wonderful newsletter, and he published this list: 50 Things He Knows. Worth a read…

    • Some examples;

      • I know that if you miss the internet for a day, you have missed everything. Miss it for a month, you have missed nothing.

      • Find where your ideas actually arrive (mine often come while reading newspapers in print) and build that into your routine. Then harvest what bubbles up. An idea you don’t write down is an idea you lose. | Read Here

I’m listening to…

  • I spent a lot of time in the car driving to and from Philadelphia. I listened to a lot of Harry Styles, Kings of Leon, LCD Soundsystem, Taylor Swift, Bon Iver, and the Lumineers.

I’m eating…

  • On the recommendation of a follower on IG, I went to Dalessandro's Steaks in Philadelphia. Incredibly delicious. I had a beer on the sidewalk as I waited for it to get made. It’s a walk-up window with a couple of picnic tables at a busy intersection, which has another steak spot across the street.

I’m watching…

  • Not much this week!
